Recap: Central Mich vs. Western Mich
Mount Pleasant, MI (Sports Network) - Trey Zeigler finished with 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the Central Michigan Chippewas as they topped their in- state rival Western Michigan Broncos, 76-70, in a Mid-American Conference battle at McGuirk Arena.
Austin McBroom and Derek Jackson scored 14 points each for Central Michigan (10-20, 5-11 MAC) while Oliver Mbaigoto grabbed 11 rebounds.
Flenard Whitfield paced Western Michigan (12-10, 6-10) with 15 points. Matt Stainbrook contributed a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds while Nate Hutcheson and Demetrius Ward chipped in 10 points each for the Broncos in their third straight loss.
Western Michigan took a 36-33 lead into the break after it shot 46.4 percent from the floor and converted 7-of-8 from the charity stripe in the first frame. The Chippewas kept it close by making 40.6 percent of their field goals in the opening half.
The Broncos saw their lead disappear after the break as they cooled off to shoot just 36.7 percent from the field in the second period. Central Michigan took control by shooting 50 percent from the floor and by knocking down 6-of-9 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
The Chippewas held a 40-34 advantage in the rebounding battle.Game Notes
