WICHITA (FoxKansas.com) -- A man accused of fatally shooting his wife at a busy north Wichita intersection as three of the woman's young children watched was in custody Monday and could face formal charges soon.
Authorities and eyewitnesses said the incident occurred Saturday shortly before noon in the 1300 block of Grove and unfolded in front of a crowd of shocked onlookers. Police have not yet identified the suspect or his wife, who suffered several gunshot wounds to the body. She was rushed for treatment to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to reports, the man chased his 30-year-old wife from inside a house into the street after several minutes of a loud argument between the two. It was not clear what the two were arguing about.
The man opened fire on the woman as she fled from the house. When he reached her location he fired additional rounds at her at close range as she lay in the street. Witnesses told The Wichita Eagle that the man talked on a cell phone after repeatedly shooting the woman.
Police arrived on the scene a few moments later and saw the suspect, who attempted to run from the scene. The man surrendered after police told him to drop the weapon, according to reports.
A crowd of at least 10 people were said to have witnessed the event, including three of the woman's young children, who ranged in age from 6 to 8 years old. Investigators surrounded the area with yellow crime scene tape as they reviewed the incident.
No other injuries were reported. Funeral arrangements for the woman were pending.
