WICHITA (FoxKansas.com) -- After leading his Wichita State team to a 26-4 record this season, coach Gregg Marshall was named coach of the year on Thursday by the Missouri Valley Conference, the fifth time in school history for the university.

Marshall is in his fifth season as head coach of the team, which currently has the conference's No. 1 seed after defeating second-place Creighton for the regular season title. League coaches, media and sports information directors voted on the contenders. He received 37 of 40 first-place votes to snare the honor.

The acclaim caps a successful season for Marshall and the Shockers, who will begin tournament play on an eight-game winning streak.

The team will open the tournament with a game on Friday against Indiana State or Southern Illinois.

Marshall locked up his 100th win at WSU with their win over Evansville on Jan. 25. His record now stands at 108-59.
