Most spray-on glass and surface cleaners are fine for everyday spills and clean-ups. On the occasions when you want to do a more thorough job, remove everything from the countertop before spraying. If you see mildew, use a chlorine bleach solution to get rid of it. Don't use abrasive cleansers that can scratch the surface. Instead, soak a paper towel in cleaning solution and place it on the trouble spot. After 15 minutes, the food should be softened enough to wipe away. Before you put the canisters and things back on the counter, be sure to clean the bottoms. Coffee, tea, mustard, and fruit juices can stain countertops. If a paste of water and baking soda doesn't remove the stain, try a paper towel moistened with a little chlorine bleach. Purple stains from price tags are easily removed with rubbing alcohol. After cutting meat or poultry, wash cutting surfaces with hot, soapy water to kill bacteria. Special anti-bacterial detergents are also available. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
