Like it or not, an interviewer will tend to judge you partly by the way you dress. The good news is, clothing is the one aspect of the interview situation over which you have complete control. So use it to your advantage. There are many books on the subject of dressing for success; some go as far as suggesting certain patterns and colors. However, what's most important is to look professional and well groomed. For the majority of interviews, a suit is recommended. A ladies' suit may consist of a skirt and jacket, or in less formal industries, dress pants and a jacket. Be sure your suit is clean, pressed and fits properly. Even if the workplace itself is casual, it's usually best to dress up. Walking in wearing jeans gives the impression that you don't take the interview very seriously. Go easy on the jewelry, and avoid any fashion extremes. When in doubt, dress on the conservative side. And never wear anything that's too short, tight, or low cut. Generally, you should dress for your interview as if you were applying for a loan at a bank.
